What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy starts from a premise most people recognise once they hear it: that symptoms are not random. They appear in a particular person, in a particular way, at a particular point in their life.

Developed in the late 18th century by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, homeopathy is built on a single core principle: like cures like. A substance that can produce a set of symptoms in a healthy person can, when carefully prepared and matched, help resolve a similar picture — often profoundly and lastingly.

Hahnemann called this the vital force: the body's innate drive to maintain order and return to balance. Symptoms, in this framework, are not the problem. They are the body's attempt to restore it.

When that response is suppressed rather than supported, illness tends to go deeper: shifting form, resurfacing elsewhere, accumulating in ways that become harder to trace.

This is visible in modern life. Grief held down because there was no space for it. Anxiety managed but never resolved. The exhaustion of mothers carrying the weight of their households while their own health goes unattended. A nervous system running on high for so long it no longer knows how to settle.

Homeopathy takes all of this as part of the case.

Individualisation

The same diagnosis can present entirely differently from one person to the next. What triggers it, what relieves it, when it began, what else was happening — these are not background details. They are the case.

Illness has layers: inherited susceptibilities and the accumulated effects of what has been suppressed, experienced, or left unresolved. A full case asks not just what is happening now, but what has shaped the ground it is growing in.

Take IBS. Three people, same diagnosis:

Person A

Symptoms flare under pressure and resolve on holiday. Chilly, anxious, craves reassurance.

Person B

Bloating and cramping worse after eating, better with movement. Irritable, overheated, never fully rests.

Person C

Symptoms began after a difficult pregnancy and never resolved. Depleted, disconnected, pushing through.

Same diagnosis. Three different cases. The remedy that fits one will not fit the others.

The remedies

Homeopathic remedies are prepared from plant, mineral, and other natural sources through potentisation: serial dilution and succussion. They do not act through chemical intervention. This places them outside the allopathic model — but not outside science. Quantum biology, biophysics, and research into the electromagnetic properties of water are all working with frameworks conventional medicine has yet to integrate.

What exists now is two centuries of documented clinical observation: a detailed body of knowledge about how substances act on the human organism, and how to match them precisely to the person who needs them.

For many people, this is where something finally shifts. If you have been managing symptoms without resolution, or feel your health has never quite recovered from a particular period or event, it may be worth exploring what a more individualised approach can offer.

I would be glad to hear from you.

In practice

A first consultation is around 90 minutes. For many people it is the first time they have been asked not just what is wrong, but how they experience it — the full texture of their health, their history, and their life.

I take the case carefully: the presenting complaint, sleep, energy, digestion, temperature, emotional state, medical history, and what was happening when things began to shift. The most useful details are often not the symptoms themselves but what surrounds them.

Follow-up appointments track what has changed. Progress should be visible within a reasonable time, and if it is not, we will reevaluate. Homeopathy works best when both patient and practitioner are paying close attention.
